I thought let me share you the efforts of people like us and success
story , the introduction of open source mainly LINUX is now part of
official syllabus of Gujarat 12th standard computer subject.

IRC commands

In view of the upcoming IRC activity anticipated by the group, here is a post with a few links to IRC (Internet Relay Chat). Thanks to Manish for pointing the need of a post out.

Clients

irssi Command line client
xchat (Gui)
mibbit.com (browser based, ION users will probably need to use this. ##C has blocked mibbit though )

The above mentioned clients should be present in the repos of the Linux distro you use.

Commands

Googling for “IRC commands” or “IRC tutorial” will gove you all the info you need to get started.

Channels you should start roaming around on : #linux, ##C , #python etc.

There are a lot of helpful and knowledgable people on these channels and you can clear your doubts etc. here. Do not hesitate to ask them thinking,”Should I??”. Just ask and they’ll help you out.

Preupgrade : Upgrade to F11 without downloading the entire DVD

This has been around for quite sometime now. This post is intended to make everyone aware of Preupgrade’s existence and to answer any queries regarding it.

What is Preupgrade?

Downloading a new Fedora release, burning the DVD and reinstalling the entire thing is very time taking and requires enough bandwith . Preupgrade is an application that allows you to upgrade to the latest Release without having to do the above mentioned steps. It only downloads updates to packages that you have installed on your system in the background, and runs the final upgrade once this is done. Hence, it saves time, bandwith.

There’s also the “icon way” of upgrading, ie, no terminal needed.

LUG meet on 13/08/2008

We scheduled a LUG meet on the above mentioned date at 5:30 PM in NLH 404 (that led Ankur to include a nice pun in the poster) which had to be later shifted to 405. Both rains and the nuisance created by some members of a certain club taking down our posters in a lot of places contributed to a low turnout, which was around 30. But, this time, I may proudly add, that it felt like what an actual LUG meet should be. All of those present contributed a lot of ideas regarding the future course of events to be organized by the LUG. So we drew up a list of the things on which we will be conducting workshops and talks:

Shell scripting on bash
Mobile development
Yet another installfest including the very important part of configuring the network interfaces
Cubing (solving Rubik’s cube)
Working with development tools like gcc and vim
Basics of assembly language programming

….and a lot more!

Keep looking for our posters in the campus for any upcoming events.

I’ve hardly noticed any activity on the forums. It could be due to the fact that guests were not allowed to view the forum and that scared everyone away I’ve squashed the bug and now you can view the forums and read posts without logging in. To comment, post or send a new message, you will need to login; registration is free, of course!

Java is completely open now

At JavaOne in May, 2006, Sun Microsystems announced they were going to release Java as free software under the terms of the GPL. The size of the task (6.5 million lines of code) was only eclipsed by the size of the opportunity for Java as a free and open technology.

At JavaOne in May 2007, Sun announced that the work was largely completed and so OpenJDK was launched. What was less newsworthy was the fact that on release – OpenJDK still relied on code that was encumbered – between 4 and 5 percent of the code was closed, non free source that Sun didn’t own.
