It all started with a failing Student’s Teacher Feedback System, designed by few fourth year students of college, in oct-nov 2008 the system was not able to scale and everything was reverted back to paper, it was then when i was contacted by a teacher from my Department ( Information and Communication Technology ), regarding if i can improve it,

i asked DJ if he wants to join me and after few weeks of coding there it was Manipal university’s first (working) Feedback System, when the point of hosting it came, i was surprised to find Manipal University has no Linux servers, i mean come on no Linux what are you people click sys admins, then we decided to setup our own server in the department, thus giving Manipal university its first Linux ( fedora 10 ) server.

currently it just hosts the Feedback System, but we are planning to use it as local ( internal ) fedora repository mirror, we need permission from the WiFi provider ION because almost all the students use only WiFi and not LAN, last time we tried we were denied by saying ” You are a threat to our network “, lets see how it goes this time. we will also require people to manage it but i think this can be handled very well by LUG Manipal, some pics

PS – i am looking for a way to convene them that setting up a mirror will be helpful for them as well as students can anyone suggest me how to go about it??

This has been around for quite sometime now. This post is intended to make everyone aware of Preupgrade’s existence and to answer any queries regarding it.

What is Preupgrade?

Downloading a new Fedora release, burning the DVD and reinstalling the entire thing is very time taking and requires enough bandwith . Preupgrade is an application that allows you to upgrade to the latest Release without having to do the above mentioned steps. It only downloads updates to packages that you have installed on your system in the background, and runs the final upgrade once this is done. Hence, it saves time, bandwith.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpgrade

https://fedoraproject.com/wiki/Interviews/PreUpgrade

There’s also the “icon way” of upgrading, ie, no terminal needed.

The LUG will have the DVD media too. Interested people may please contact us.

The F11 preview DVD is available with us. Please refer :

“The Fedora Project is rolling out some impressive new features and
functions with Leonidas. One of the most notable is the use of ext4 as
the default file system (while many distributions are planning on making
ext4 the default in the near future, some recent releases have chosen to
keep it optional this time around). The Fedora team says that aside from
ext4 performance enhancements, Leonidas users will be treated to faster
boot and shutdown procedures, an automatic font, codec and clipart
installer, and the DeviceKit device management tool designed to work
with (and sometimes stand in for) hal. Fedora 11 users can also look
forward to updated versions of the KDE, GNOME, and Xfce desktop
environments, improvements in direct rendering, and better volume
control and power management tools.”

LUG Manipal is organizing a Linux Open Week sponsored by Fedora from 23rd-28th and 30th March. As the name says, this event stretches for one whole week. It is aimed at increasing awareness about FOSS and also how linux can be useful for people from all spheres of life rather than just a handful of programmers and developers. Keeping this in mind, we have planned the following

An installfest spanning two days for those yet to find a foothold in the linux world. The distro to be installed is Fedora 10 Cambridge.

A user’s day which would consist of sessions taken by various LUG members on different softwares like office suites, productivity tools etc. available on the linux platform that’d help the new users in making the transition from Windows to Linux.

Another couple of days have been devoted to Developer’s Day which would be about getting interested programmers started off with development in the Linux environment. It’s no secret that Linux is the development environment of choice around the world because of it’s open nature and no self-respecting programmer in Manipal would want to miss out on these two days!

Finally, the last day would be a Hackathon to bring out the hacker in the participating coders. They’d be trying to make a firefox extension for a certain web service which would be decided on the spot. Needless to say, it’d be fun. The choice of the software to be hacked on remains flexible though and the enthusiasm and the coding expertise of the participants will also be taken into account

Do checkout the event wiki page for further details.

These are the awesome posters that have been put up around Manipal for the Open Week promotion and kudos to Sheeladitya for the awesome work

The easiest was will be to install the package http://atrpms.net/dist/f9/synaptics/
or you can do it manually here

edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Added the following to the ServerLayout Section

InputDevice “TouchPad” “CorePointer”

add a new section:

Section “InputDevice”
Driver “synaptics”
Identifier “TouchPad”
Option “SendCoreEvents”
Option “Protocol” “auto-dev”
Option “SHMConfig” “on”
Option “TapButton1″ “1″
Option “TapButton2″ “2″
EndSection

all done logout and login again and everything should be working fine

Update: found the rpm package here
