Installing any Linux on HP Compaq 6515b

Here is the post which is very important for Linux in Manipal, its How to install Linux on those ATI machines?? Let us go step by step
You need to know that this install procedure is for Ubuntu 7.10 but can be followed on any other Distro as well you only need to change 1-2 steps which have been mentioned at the end

First you need to download the ATI drivers go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html go to support and drivers then select Linux , Integrated /motherboard , Readon Xpress 1250 click go and download the drivers.
Now that you have the drivers copy them to your windows C drive, now that you have the Drivers all that is needed is installing them ;-)
so just boot into the CD/DVD by inserting the CD/DVD into the drive and rebooting the comp, you will be presented with different options select which ever is appropriate like “Install xyz” for installing, etc If your computer boots into windows with the CD inside you will have to change the BIOS settings and make it boot from the CD/DVD, after that is done you will see a error saying there is some problem with the x server ( if the install screen is visible then proceed with the install ) press ctrl + alt + F1 and you will see console type the commandsudo -i or suyou will see some thing like root@xyz: the we need to mount the windows C drive typemount /dev/sda1 /mntthen go to the directorycd /mntnow install the driverssh ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.runwhere ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run is the name of the driver file with me, it will start the install procedure just follow that and after the install just configure your resolution withaticonfig --resolution=0,1280x800as my resolution was 1280×800
after this we just need to start the X server again typestartxafter this is done you will see the Desktop just click on install and follow the procedure now as you were using the Live CD the drivers were there in the RAM you need to install the drivers again on your comp once the installation is complete, the steps are same as above just the directory will change from /mnt to the directory to that you have mounted your drive to and your work is done….

Now talking about the distro’s
the procedure is as mentioned for Ubuntu or Kubuntu 6.10 / 7.04 / 7.10, LinuxMint 3.0 / 3.1 / 4.0, gOS, Freespire
just install then install the drivers for OpenSUSE 10.2 / 10.3 , Fedora 7 / 8 , Mandriva 2008.0 , CentOS 5.0

Update :- Detail after install instructions for Fedora 8 are available here

  1. I’ve been meaning to try to get ubuntu running on my compaq 6515b … in particular I wanted to create a bootable installation on a usb stick. If all goes well I’ll comment again about any issues I ran into …

  4. well this is only the basic step or a last resort best is to install the fglrx drivers and kmod’s provided by the repositories restricted of 3rd party but you can do that easily after this step as it provides basic for running GUI

  7. Excellent Work Ankur! Now i understood why many First Year guys were telling that Linux crashes on their boxes. They should be cleared of this myth, so tell them that actually only the Xserver crashes, not the whole system. :P
